Rotary Kilns

Wet Process Kilns

The main difference between this process and the dry process is that the raw materials are prepared in water form, a slurry, before being fed into the kiln system. This method uses around 35-50% less energy than the wet process. The slurry is prepared by adding around 35-50% water to finely crushed raw material (limestone) which acts as a binding agent. Then clay or shale is added to provide silica, alumina and iron oxide required for forming cement clinker. Before feeding into a kiln, the slurry is heated to evaporate most of its moisture content leaving only about 15% moisture in it which is needed for chemical reactions during firing in a kiln.

After cooling down from its firing temperatures, it gets ground into fine powder which we call cement then conveyed to storage silos from where it’s collected as per requirements or stored for future use.

Long Dry Kilns

Long dry kilns are the most common type of kiln used in the manufacture of Portland cement. They can also be used to generate special types of cements. Long dry kilns are efficient to operate with a fuel-to-cement ratio of about 1.25. The long dry process is well suited for materials that are already well blended and difficult to grind, such as marly raw materials or very hard raw materials, but can handle easily ground material when fitted with a preheater stage.

In a long dry process kiln, Pellets or nodules of wet raw mix are fed onto an inclined grate preheater before entering the rotary kiln itself where they move countercurrent to hot combustion gases from an oil or gas burner at one end (see Figure 3). In this way heat is transferred from the hot gases on their way out through the system to the incoming pelletized feedstock and some water is driven off.

The pellets then fall into the rotary kiln itself where they are heated up and then drop into a cooler where they continue their descent while being cooled down by air circulating around them.
