The durock story begins in the late 1980’s. The industry was changing, and some of our competitors were introducing the “concrete stamp”, a machine that could etch patterns directly into concrete. We saw that this was not just another tool for our customers – it was a way to change their business forever.
Our customers saw that too, and started asking for a similar machine from us. So we built one and named it “durock”.
Durock is used around the world today, in some of the most beautiful buildings on earth. Our machines set new standards in quality, speed and flexibility.
Today, durock is synonymous with the best concrete finishing solutions available: durock® has been used to create finishes that are smooth, durable, waterproof and fireproof.
We are proud to be among the global leaders in concrete finishing machinery, serving large-scale project developers, contractors and specifiers.
Durock is a family-owned concrete product company.
Durock has been creating solutions to the concrete industry since 1977 and continues to do so today.
We have nearly 200 concrete projects currently under construction, and have over 30,000 active customers.
Durock provides its products to many different industries in North America including: Schools, Universities, Highways, Transit Stations, Parking Facilities, Construction Projects and many more.

Durock’s products have earned a reputation for being long-lasting and easy to maintain. The fine grain of durock stone is designed to stand up to heavy industrial use, but the colors are so vibrant, you’ll never know it’s not real stone.
We are proud to be a part of this community and look forward to continuing to grow with you.
Please let us know if we can help you in any way…
Durock® Company
When I asked him about his long career, he explained that he’d had to start somewhere. “I started at the bottom,” he said, pointing to a picture of him in his twenties, standing outside the headquarters of a small finishing business where he was employed as a janitor. I asked what it took to make it to the top.
“Oh, I don’t know,” he replied. “That’s up to you.”
Because durock was never large enough for its own management, Mr. Nastase has always worked for other companies and generally done his work part-time. He commands a good salary but makes very little money on his own name; he is proud of that fact.
I asked whether he was worried that people would take advantage of him because they thought they were hiring the durock brand when they were really hiring an individual who was not known for being particularly great in any particular job. He looked surprised and said that if anyone ever treated him badly as a hired hand, then he would complain about them publicly. But as far as he knew, no one had ever tried to cheat him out of something by pretending that they were hiring the durock brand when they weren’t.
This blog is the latest in a series of efforts to communicate with our customers and potential customers. It is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all the things we do, but rather a primer.

In a famous essay, the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu described how people are socialized into expected ways of doing things. One way is to be rewarded for making money in a particular way. Another is to be rewarded for following the rules.
To follow the rules is easy: you can do it by sticking to what everyone else does. But making money that way doesn’t pay off very well. The rewards are too far away and too indirect. The incentives are not strong enough; you don’t get enough bang for your buck.
To be creative, you have to invent something different, something nobody else has thought of that promises substantial rewards that you can get right now. And if no one else is doing it, then you have to do it—or else fail.
That last part is what makes creativity dangerous and hard work: being creative means taking risks, because if it doesn’t work out, you’re stuck with a big problem on your hands.
But the rewards of invention are so great—the chance to make yourself rich and famous—that most people will take those risks anyway, and do what they have to do to make their ideas come true. That’s why there are so many successful entrepreneurs and inventors.
