Stucco is a very durable exterior finish and is almost maintenance free. However, it can become dirty and stained by mold, mildew, salt and grime. When this happens, it is time to wash the stucco. You will need some basic equipment, the proper cleaning solution and you are on your way.

Step 1 – Obtain the Proper Equipment

You will need a hose with a pressure nozzle, a long-handled soft bristle brush, a bucket and your cleaning solution.

Step 2 – Make Your Cleaning Solution

The easiest way to make your cleaning solution for washing stucco is to use a trisodium phosphate cleaner mixed with bleach. Mix one part trisodium phosphate cleaner to one part bleach in a bucket. Fill the bucket with warm water from your hose (not hot water) until it is half full. Stir the mixture with a paint stick until well mixed.

Start at the top of the wall and work down. Spray water on an area approximately 3 feet wide by 3 feet high. Then apply your cleaning solution generously to this area with your long-handled brush, scrubbing well into the stucco surface. Let the area soak for about 15 minutes before

1. First select a nice sunny day for your cleaning project. This will ensure that the stucco dries thoroughly and does not support any mildew growth after you have cleaned it.

You will need a garden hose with a high-pressure nozzle attachment or pressure washer, a cleaning solution, a scrub brush or broom, a ladder and an extra person to help you move the ladder.

If you want to use detergent when washing your stucco walls, mix one-quarter cup of mild dishwashing liquid into one gallon of warm water. If you want to use bleach when washing your stucco walls, mix one cup of household bleach into one gallon of warm water. If you have stains on your stucco walls that are caused by mold or mildew, mix together three cups of powdered laundry detergent with two gallons of hot water in a bucket. Then add half a cup of household bleach and a quarter cup of trisodium phosphate for every gallon of this solution that you mix.

Use a hose or pressure washer to apply water to the stucco wall. For best results, start at the top of the wall and work your way down in a circular motion. If you have any areas that are particularly dirty, such as oil stains from cars parked near the house, let the water sit on these spots for a few minutes before rinsing.

Use a soft-bristled brush and soapy water to clean areas of the stucco wall that are extra dirty. Use a ladder to reach higher spots on the wall. After scrubbing, rinse the soap off with your hose or pressure washer.

Fill a bucket with clear water and use it to rinse off your brush. Dip the brush in the bucket and scrub it against itself to remove any remaining soap residue or dirt. Continue rinsing until no foam appears when you scrub the brush against itself with clear water.

Rinse off your soft-bristled brush with clean water after each section of stucco. Repeat steps 2 through 4 until you have washed all of your stucco walls.
