A question that is often asked on the blog is how to care for Hardie Backer board when it leaks. I thought I would put together a few tips on how to treat these boards that are leaking. Before we get started though, we need to understand what kind of backer board this is and why it is used in some applications.

You have just installed a new shower using hardie backer board. After the job is done you are taking a shower and notice that the seams of the tile are leaking water. Have no fear, this is a very common problem with these types of products. Hardie Backer board is made from cement and should not be used in wet areas, it has minerals in it that will cause staining to the grout and it will eventually deteriorate if it is exposed to water.
To fix this you need to purchase something called Cement Backer Board Sealer and apply it using a paint brush or roller to the seams of the tile. You will want to make sure the surface is clean and dry before applying the sealer. This sealer can be purchased at any Home Depot or Lowes store.
HardieBacker cement board is a tile underlayment made for wet areas like kitchens and bathrooms. This cement-based backer board, made of 90% Portland cement and sand, resists damage from moisture and mold and provides a stable base for tile. When you install it on bathroom walls or kitchen counters, you may need to treat the seams with waterproofing materials.
HardieBacker is manufactured by James Hardie Building Products and comes in 3-foot by 5-foot panels. The company recommends using their own proprietary brand of waterproofing compounds to seal all seams between boards. However, if you find your HardieBacker leaking, there are some other solutions that might help you stop the leak before water causes serious damage to your home.
Check the HardieBacker installation instructions to determine which type of waterproofing compound was used in your home. If it was a non-water soluble compound, then it should be protected by a waterproof membrane under the backer board. If not, the leak may be caused by bad caulking or grout at the seams or cracks in the backer board itself.

We recommend using Kerdi from Schluter Systems because they have specific products designed specifically for these types of situations
