Understand the Yield
The yield of the product is based on the size and depth of your mold or form to cast your concrete countertop. A standard 1:2:3 ratio by volume will give you a compressive strength of approximately 3000 psi (pounds per square inch) when cured with an appropriate liquid chemical admixture (super plasticizer). In other words, it will have good strength for most applications; however, if you are doing a large cantilevered section or an end grain cutting board, you may need to add more Portland cement to increase the overall compressive strength.

How much mix do I need?
The most common question we get on our site is how much mix do I need for my project? The answer depends on the size and shape of your project as well as the type of finish you want. We recommend that you figure out the volume of your countertop by multiplying length x width x depth. Once you have this number, divide it by 27 to convert it into cubic yards (because there are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard). Now take this number and multiply by 1.44 (there are 144 pounds in one cubic foot and a 60-lb bag of premix concrete weighs approximately 40 lbs.). This will give you the total weight (in pounds) of the premix concrete that you need.
Concrete countertops mix is generally mixed by hand in a wheelbarrow. Many contractors will mix the concrete in batches of three to five gallons. The size of the countertop will determine how much concrete is required. For example, a 60 square foot countertop requires around 16 bags of concrete.
The ratio of cement to sand and gravel can be varied to create different strengths of concrete. A common ratio used for countertops is 3:2:1 (cement:sand:gravel) but the proportions can vary depending on your needs.
