There’s a lot of talk these days about the “cement” industry. It’s the second-biggest carbon emitter after power generation and accounts for 5% of global CO2 emissions. But what is cement? And how does it work?

In a nutshell, concrete is made up of two ingredients: an aggregate (usually sand and gravel) and paste (a mixture of water and cement). The paste, when mixed with water, binds the aggregate together to form concrete. The most common type of cement used in this process is Portland Cement

The Concrete Revolution is about change: new things, new materials, new methods, new ways of thinking. I’ve been working in concrete for a long time, and I have seen some of these things happen up close. But to understand where we’re going, you have to know where we’ve been.

Cement is one of the oldest and most versatile building materials on earth. The earliest known use was by the ancient Egyptians. Concrete doesn’t rot or burn easily, it’s extremely durable and water resistant, and it holds up well against earthquakes and other disasters.

Concrete has changed a lot over the years. It used to be made mostly with lime and sand; now it is made mostly with Portland cement and aggregate (sand or gravel). It used to be made by hand; now it is made by machine. It used to be poured into wooden forms; now it is placed into steel forms with reinforcing steel inside. It used to take days or weeks before you could use a concrete structure; now they are ready in hours or days.

Cement is one of the most important building materials in today’s world. It is used in all major construction projects, from the foundation of a house to the tallest skyscraper, from the largest dam to highway bridges that span rivers and valleys.

In this blog we plan to cover topics ranging from new applications for these materials, to the ways cement and concrete are made, to exciting breakthroughs in production technologies. We’ll look at innovations in concrete products and their use—from paving stones and decorative pavers, to retaining walls and concrete masonry units. And we’ll explore sustainable development solutions involving concrete, as well as environmental issues with respect to cement production.

As we go along, we hope you will contribute your own observations and questions about concrete and its uses. Together, let’s learn how we can build a better world using concrete.

In the early 20th century, white cement was the new kid on the block. Literally. Its use as cladding and decorative paneling gave architects and engineers a way to make buildings gleam in the sunlight, and not just in white. Because of its high refractive index, white cement could be used to create colors that no other material could match.

In 1929, a large building on 5th Avenue in New York City was given a face-lift with a new white cement facade. The building’s owners wanted to make it more attractive so they had their architects cover up the old stone facade with beautiful blue panels made from white cement.

White cement is the key to beautiful concrete floors, walls and countertops. With white cement, you can create terracotta pots that look just like the real thing. You can also create a beautiful backsplash for your kitchen or bathroom. When combined with different aggregates, it creates unique textures and patterns that add visual interest to your space.

White cement is a type of portland cement that differs from gray portland cement in its color and in the way it’s used in construction. Instead of being used on its own as gray portland cement is, white cement is used to produce decorative and structural concrete products such as precast masonry units and architectural concrete.

The biggest difference between gray portland cement and white cement is the raw material used in making them. White cement requires iron-free materials so it can remain white after it’s set. The other difference between these two types of cements is how they’re used in construction projects.

While gray portland cement is more often used in general construction projects such as sidewalks, walls, bridges and roads because of its strength, white cement has many uses beyond decorative concrete structures. It can be used to make oil wells, paper mills, glass factories, textile plants and power plants look better than ever before
