Surface Bonding Cement Frequently Asked Questions?
What is Surface Bonding Cement?
Our Surface Bonding Cement is a unique high strength, cementitious coating that bonds new or existing concrete or masonry to form a monolithic surface that is strong, waterproof, weather resistant and fire resistant. It is formulated with special cementitious aggregates and admixtures to provide superior adhesion and flexural strength. The Surface Bonding Cement has a high resistance to water penetration, water vapor transmission (breathability), and is extremely weather resistant. It also protects against freeze/thaw damage.
Q: What is Surface Bonding Cement?
A: SBC is a high performance cement designed for bonding and waterproofing concrete block. It is a dry mix that typically contains Portland cement, graded silica sand and chemical additives. The mixture is applied to the surface of the concrete block where it chemically reacts with the calcium hydroxide present in the block to form a very hard water-resistant material that bonds the individual blocks into a monolithic structure.
Q: How effective is it at waterproofing?
A: SBC waterproofs by forming a strong permanent bond with the blocks at the surface and filling any voids in the blocks. This results in a wall that behaves as a single unit, eliminating mortar joints as potential sources of water penetration. While SBC does not increase the strength of concrete block walls, it can be used to repair spalled or damaged surfaces.
Q: Can SBC be used as a paint substitute?
A: Yes, when applied at 1/4 – 5/16″, one coat of SBC will color and seal bare CMU walls. When applied at 1/8″ – 3/16″ two coats are required for good coverage.
Q: What are some common uses for Surface Bonding Cement
Q: What is Surface Bonding Cement?
A: Surface Bonding Cement is a fiber reinforced portland cement based coating used in the construction of monolithic concrete walls. In addition to providing a weather resistant surface, it also serves as a “scratch” coat for later application of decorative finishes.
Q: Is Surface Bonding Cement durable?
A: Yes. Surface bonding cement is designed to withstand the freeze/thaw cycles common to many areas of the country. We recommend that you periodically inspect your walls for signs of deterioration or wear and repair as necessary to maintain the warranty. Please note that any cracks in the existing structure will allow water to penetrate the wall, therefore causing deterioration of the coating.
Q: How do I apply Quikrete® Surface Bonding Cement?
A: For detailed instructions on how to apply QUIKRETE® Surface Bonding Cement please visit our website at www.quikrete.com or call our technical service department at 1-800-282-5828.
Q: What is Surface Bonding Cement?
A: Surface Bonding Cement is a Portland cement-based stucco used for decorating exterior concrete block walls.
Q: What is the difference between Surface Bonding Cement and other types of stucco?
A: Surface Bonding Cement is a heavy bodied product that contains fibers for strength. It can be applied directly to the concrete block without using chicken wire or metal lath.
Q: How thick can I apply Surface Bonding Cement?
A: Apply in two coats. The first coat may be applied up to 1/4-inch thick. The second coat should be 1/8-inch thick, or less.
Q: Can I apply Surface Bonding Cement over painted surfaces?
A: Yes, but you must remove all loose paint and any peeling, chipping, cracking paint. You must also prime with a bonding primer prior to applying the first coat of Surface Bonding Cement.
What is Surface Bonding Cement?
Surface Bonding Cement is a fiber reinforced Portland cement based structural repair and resurfacing material requiring only the addition of water. The product is supplied in 80 lb (36.28 kg) bags and in 3000 lb (1361 kg) bulk sacks. It can be used for new construction as well as for repairing and resurfacing existing concrete, masonry, or wood surfaces. A properly installed 3/8 inch (10 mm) application of Surface Bonding Cement will provide a durable surface that is impact, abrasion, freeze-thaw resistant and waterproof. The resulting surface will resist temperatures up to 1200º F (649º C). Surface Bonding Cement may also be used to bond new concrete to old concrete.
Surface Bonding Cement is a field proven solution to monolithic slabs and concrete masonry building walls. Surface Bonding Cement is applied to the surface of concrete block, brick, stone or cinder block and then textured or scored with a trowel to create a finish that has the appearance of natural stone.
Surface bonding cement is most commonly used over concrete masonry blocks because the cement bonds to the block so well. Because there is no need for re-bar or wire mesh, surface bonding cement can be installed at a fraction of the time it takes to install other types of foundations or walls. In addition, surface bonding cement can be painted or stained as needed.
