Lime mortar mix is a traditional mix used by old world masons to build brick and cinder block structures. The lime mortar mix has great adhesion ability and allows the bricks to “breathe” which extends the life of the structure.

The lime mortar mix for brick and cinder block is 5 parts sand to 1 part lime by volume. The lime putty will be about a 1:1 ratio. For the best results, we need to use a very slow speed mixer because we don’t want air mixed in. If air becomes mixed into the product, it will be weak and crumble. After mixing, we need to let the mortar sit, or “slake”, for 12 to 24 hours before we use it, so the perlite has time to absorb water. The slaking process is what gives the mortar its strength. If you have large aggregates in your mix, it will take longer for the perlite to absorb water and completely hydrate.
If you are doing anything with wood, do not use a lime mortar. Wood rots when it comes into contact with moisture and limestone will leach moisture from the wood causing it to rot faster than normal.
We can’t mix pure lime with the sand. Because lime is not a good binder, and it is vulnerable to moisture. It will get soft when wet and then become hard again when dry. But, a mortar made of lime will be very weak.

Mortar made from hydrated lime will set more quickly than one made from a putty, but will have less strength and durability because the more water there is in the mix, the weaker it will be.
