10 Ways You are Damaging Your Eyes Without Knowing

We, as humans, are all guilty of bad habits. We smoke, drink too much and don’t get enough sleep. Some of us are in the habit of crossing our eyes, picking at pimples and biting our nails. But do you know that there are other habits we’ve developed that could be damaging our eyesight? We’d like to take a moment to point out the worst offenders and show you how to break the cycle.

1. Rubbing Your Eyes

When you rub your eyes, you put pressure on the muscles and blood vessels around them. This can lead to eye fatigue, loss of vision, dark circles or even broken capillaries. Sound scary? It is! So next time you want to rub your eyes, try splashing them with cold water instead.

2. Staring at a Screen all Day

According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), people who spend hours in front of a computer screen often blink less frequently than normal which dries out eyes and makes them more vulnerable to infection. This is known as “Computer Vision Syndrome.” Change your habits by following the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes look away from the screen and focus on something 20

There are many things you can do to damage your eyes every day. You may not notice how much damage you are doing because it happens gradually. The truth is most of us have very bad habits when it comes to our eyesight. But we don’t realize the damage we are doing until it’s too late.

Here are 10 of the most damaging eye habits that could be hurting your vision without you even realizing it:

1. Rubbing your eyes

Everyone rubs their eyes from time to time. It can seem like a harmless habit, but it is actually very damaging to your eyes! When you rub your eyes, you put pressure on the delicate blood vessels surrounding them, which can cause them to burst and bleed. This is also true when you rub your eyes after washing them with soap, which dries out the skin around them and makes them more vulnerable to damage.

2. Wearing contacts for too long

Your contact lenses are not meant to be worn all day long, especially if they are disposable ones! They should be taken out at night and replaced every few months depending on how often they’re used. It’s also important not to sleep while wearing contacts because this can cause infections or scratches on the cornea (the outer layer of our eye

Eyes are the most beautiful gift from God to us. We should be thankful to God for giving us such a precious gift. However, many of us do not take care of our eyes. I am going to present you the list of 10 things that can damage your eyes and their solution, so that you can keep your eyes safe and healthy.

1. Computer/Phone Screen use:

Staring at a bright screen can cause eye strain, but it is not harmful to the eyes and will not cause long-term damage.

However, excessive screen time can lead to computer vision syndrome (CVS) which involves the eyes drying out and becoming irritated from staring at your phone or computer for too long.

2. Squinting:

If you squint often because you have poor vision, this can lead to headaches, eye pain and underlying conditions like astigmatism, cataracts and hyperopia.

3. Rubbing Eyes:

Although it is tempting to rub an itchy or irritated eye, this is a habit that should be avoided as it can lead to damage of the cornea. If you have an itch, blinking rapidly will usually solve the problem. If not, try applying some lubricating eye drops. Only rub your eyes if they are red or sore from allergies as otherwise it could lead to irritation or worse – infection!

4. Wearing Contact Lenses for Too Long:

Contacts lenses are a great alternative to glasses but wearing them for too long without giving your eyes a break can lead to redness, irritation and blurred vision. This is because contact lenses absorb oxygen

Don’t leave your home without your sunglasses. Sunglasses protect your eyes from harmful UV rays that can damage your eyes and lead to cataracts.

The proper screen brightness will make it easier on your eyes to view your screen, especially when you are in a dark room or at night.

If you work on the computer for long periods make sure to take frequent breaks to rest your eyes – the 20-20-20 rule is a good rule of thumb: Every 20 minutes look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

When reading, don’t hold the book too close or too far away. You should be able to adjust the distance so that you can just feel the presence of the book in front of you, with its edges disappearing from view. If this seems like a lot to remember, just know that reading at arm’s length is generally about right.

At some point, you may have been advised to use a pencil to avoid eye strain.

The truth is that eye strain can occur even when you are using a pencil.

If you have been suffering from this condition, it may be due to the eye being sore from overwork or from an eye problem.
