Cement is a fine powder made of limestone, clay and sand. It is used for building construction as mortar for bonding bricks or stones. Cement is also used for making joints for drains. There are different types of cement which cater to different uses.
Types of Cement and Their Uses
1) Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC)
It is the most commonly used type of cement in the world because it can be used in concrete, mortar and grout. It can be mixed with sand, water and aggregates to form concrete of desired strength. Since it has a high compressive strength, it is also used to bond two pieces of concrete together by mixing it with sand in a ratio of 1:3. OPC is suitable for all types of construction work.
Cement is a vital ingredient for most of the construction purposes. Be it building a house or making bridges or other structures, cement is required everywhere. Though there are several types of cements available in the market, but they are used according to the requirements and needs.
Different types of cement are:
1. Rapid hardening cement: This type of cement is normally used in road constructions and concrete slabs where a rapid rate of hardening is required.
2. Water proof cement: This type of cement is used where the construction is in contact with water such as sewage treatment plants, water tanks, marine constructions etc.
3. High alumina cement: In this type of cement, alumina content ranges from 32% to 42%. Apart from high alumina content, it also contains gypsum and calcium chloride. It has a very high rate of heat evolution and provides an excellent resistance to sulphate attack and abrasion.

Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC)
This is the most commonly used type of cement. It is known to be suitable for all general construction works under normal conditions such as RCC, brickwork, plastering, flooring etc. OPC 53 grade cement can achieve compressive strength of 53MPa at the end of 28 days from casting. Also available are OPC 43 & 33 grades.

Ordinary Portland Cement:
The ordinary portland cement is one of the most widely used type of cement. In general, this ordinary portland cement is a basic ingredient of concrete, mortar, and most non-specialty grout. The ordinary portland cement is used in various construction work such as plain and reinforced cement concrete, brick and stone masonry, floors and plastering, bridges, culverts, railway sleepers, road works etc.
This ordinary portland cement is used in RCC work because it has high workability and good strength. It also has low heat of hydration and offers a degree of resistance to sulfate attack. This ordinary portland cement gives a moderate rate of strength development. This type of cement is used in mass concrete structures like dams etc., where high initial strength is not required but high ultimate strength is required at the end of 28 days.
Rapid Hardening Cement:
It produces higher early strength than the ordinary Portland cement (OPC). The rapid hardening cement contains tricalcium silicate (C3S) more than that contained in OPC. It also contains iron oxide or iron sulphate or both in an adequate quantity to accelerate the rate of hydration. The setting time for this type
Portland Pozzolana Cement:
Opc is an ordinary Portland cement. It is prepared by grinding clinker with 3-5% gypsum in a closed circuit ball mill to required fineness. Ordinary Portland cement is the most commonly used cement for a wide range of applications. These applications cover ordinary, standard, high strength concretes, masonry and plastering works.
Portland Pozzolana cement (PPC) is a kind of Blended Cement which is produced by either intergrinding of OPC clinker along with gypsum and pozzolanic materials in certain proportions or grinding the OPC clinker, gypsum and Pozzolanic materials separately and thoroughly blending them in certain proportions. This blended cement has properties similar to those of OPC, but its use results in higher long term strengths and more impermeable concrete. The presence of pozzolanic materials in PPC improves its resistance to chemical attack compared to OPC. As per BIS standards, the combined use of fly ash and slag will be treated as PPC.
Ordinary Portland Cement:
Portland Blast Furnace Slag Cement:
Portland Slag Cement (PSC) is manufactured by either inter
