The history of reinforced cement concrete

Reinforced cement concrete has been around for a long time, being first developed in 1849 by Joseph Monier of France. The use of this product was popularized by French civil engineer Francois Coignet in 1860, who built a house entirely from reinforced concrete. Monier’s early patent was for garden furniture and flower pots made from reinforced concrete. The company he formed to produce these objects still exists today as Ets Georges Monier – a thriving business with an annual turnover of more than 50 million euros.

Reinforced cement concrete is a product of the modern age. It is the result of the marriage, through scientific research and careful engineering, of two materials which have been known and used by mankind for thousands of years: reinforced cement concrete (RCC) and steel.

The advantages of RCC are numerous. Due to its strength, it can be used to build structures which are taller, larger and stronger than ever before. The safety factor engineered into every RCC structure makes it almost impervious to fire, floods and other natural hazards. The industrialized method of producing RCC structures ensures that it is not prone to cracks or damages due to weathering or ageing. It can be easily molded into any shape or form, thus giving architects a complete freedom in designing their structures. Most importantly, RCC is environmentally-friendly and sustainable over a long period of time.

Reinforced cement concrete (RCC) is one of the most commonly used construction materials. It is also called reinforced concrete, reinforced Portland cement concrete (PC) or RCP.

It is a composite material made up of steel reinforcement and concrete. Concrete is very strong in compression, but weak in tension. To counter this weakness, steel reinforcement is used inside concrete to strengthen it in tension. This combined material has high tensile strength & ductility, and can be moulded into any shape and size for construction needs.

Concrete was first discovered by Joseph Aspdin in 1824 when he heated a mixture of powdered limestone and clay in his kitchen oven. He called the product “Portland cement” from the resemblance of its colour to Portland stone that was quarried on the Isle of Portland off the coast of Dorset, England.

Concrete has been evolved over centuries; modern day concrete, with its many applications and uses, was invented by Joseph Monier, a Parisian gardener who made garden pots and tubs of concrete reinforced with iron mesh; he received a patent in 1867.

Reinforced concrete is a composite material in which concrete’s relatively low tensile strength and ductility are counteracted by the inclusion of reinforcement having higher tensile strength or ductility. The reinforcement is usually, though not necessarily, steel reinforcing bars (rebar) and is usually embedded passively in the concrete before the concrete sets.

The product of the burn is then ground into a fine powder. When mixed with water, this forms a paste that binds with sand and rock to harden into a rock-like mass known as concrete.
