The Masonry Cement of today is a product that has evolved from true masonry cement. True masonry cement was made from a mixture of Portland Cement, lime and sand. True masonry cements were often used in combination with other materials to produce mortars and stucco mixes.

Masonry cement became popular in the mid-1950’s when manufacturers began producing different types of blended cements to improve upon the products used in stucco work. These blended cements used flyash (a byproduct of coal combustion) as an ingredient to replace some of the portland cement in the mixture.

These products are referred to as type M Masonry Cement, as defined by ASTM Specifications C 91/C91M, “Standard Specification for Masonry Cement.” Type M Masonry Cement is a blend of Portland or blended hydraulic cement and plasticizing materials (such as limestone or hydrated lime) together with other materials introduced to enhance one or more properties of the mix.

In addition to type M Masonry Cement, there are two other types of masonry cement available: Type N and Type S. Each type is specifically designed for use in different applications.

Masonry Cement is composed of Portland Cement, lime, sand, plasticizers and other proprietary additives. It is formulated to provide high early strength and excellent workability at all moisture levels. Masonry Cement provides consistently high strength and resistance to freeze/thaw degradation. The product also offers superior water retentivity and enhances adhesion and bond of mortars to masonry units.

Masonry cement can be used as an ingredient in both Type N and Type S masonry mortars as defined by ASTM C 270 and ASTM C 1714 standards.

Masonry cement is used to make durable, high-strength concrete masonry units (CMUs) and mortar.

Masonry cement meets strict requirements for use in mortar for masonry construction as outlined in ASTM C 1329, Standard Specification for Mortar Cement. The specifications establish minimum requirements for strength, water retention and air content of the mortar made with masonry cement.

Masonry cement was first produced in 1871 by David O Saylor in Coplay Pennsylvania at what would later become Essroc Cement Company’s Nazareth Plant. The company now known as Essroc has been making masonry cement longer than anyone else.
