Concrete is a very powerful building material. If used correctly, it can make buildings that look like tile or brick. For example, here are two pictures of the same apartment building:

The first one is the original concrete structure from 1971. The second is what it looks like today with everything replaced by tile or brick or both. As you can see, after forty years the color has faded substantially, especially in the windows and on the edges of the bricks. But if you didn’t know that, you wouldn’t notice any difference at all.

There are many different ways to make concrete look like tile or brick. These include:

Paint over it – A coat of paint will hide imperfections in the concrete, but it won’t change its color. White paint is especially good for this because white glows brightly in sunlight and looks warm against a white wall; paint stores sell a variety of white paints specifically designed for this purpose.

Tile over it – Tile is opaque and doesn’t reflect light like a window does; it also doesn’t transmit light like a window does. But unlike paint, tile actually changes your apartment’s color by reflecting some light and absorbing some other light so that different colors are mixed together in your apartment’s interior lights. That the concrete you worked so hard to make has the same color and texture as tile or brick is important for practical purposes.

But it is not what makes an object look like tile or brick. It’s not even what makes it look like concrete. It’s what we think of as its shape and texture, and how heavy it is, and how it reacts with light, that do that.

The concrete under your feet would have the same color, texture and weight whether you made it look like tile or brick or concrete. What matters is where you put those four things together: in space, the way they are arranged.

You can make a flat piece of concrete look like tile by putting tiles on top of it; then you can make a flat piece of concrete look like brick by putting bricks on top of it; then you can make a flat piece of concrete look like wood by putting wood on top of it; then you can make a flat piece of concrete look like stone by putting stones on top of it; then you can make a flat piece of concrete look like bronze by putting bronze on top of it; then, if you’re really brave, you can even make a flat piece of concrete look like gold by putting gold on top of that…

Straw bale isn’t just a form of insulation. It’s also used for construction. A straw bale house can look like tile or brick! This is because no one has ever figured out how to make concrete look like tile or brick.

“But it’s too expensive to use in my home,” you say. Well, if you have a high-end design that calls for a lot of expensive details, such as tiles or bricks or concrete floors, then you should pay for the best materials to make them look good. And if you think that’s going to cost too much, I understand.

But if you want to make your house look like it was built by a mason and not some fancy contractor with a stock of cheap materials, then here is how you do it.

You start with something that is already cheap: ordinary concrete. It comes in two styles: one is plain, and the other has decorative patterns of small white beads embedded in the mix. The plain style is ideal for making tile floors and brick walls because it requires no extra labor; just pour it into forms and let it dry until hard. You can also make these look great by using a special kind of mortar called portland cement (which looks like concrete but is actually a combination of limestone and sand or gravel).

The decorative style has tiny white beads embedded in it; like the floor tiles, this makes the finished product look more expensive than it really is. And while ordinary concrete is cheap, portland cement can be

Corner-bead concrete is sometimes called “faux masonry” because it looks like brick. Other colors are also available, such as “pink tile.”

It’s a relatively simple process: mix cement and sand with an aggregate (a kind of stone, usually limestone or marble) to make concrete; then add water and sometimes some colorant. The result is a very strong, durable concrete that looks like tile or brick.

The problem is that you can’t get the same look using natural stones such as limestone. This is because there are different kinds of stone that have subtly different colors and textures.

So for “faux masonry,” you want to use concrete made from a mix of cement and sand made from a mix of sand and limestone that closely matches the original look and texture of the natural stone you’re trying to imitate. When colors are added to the finished concrete, they should be added in such a way that they do not distort its texture.

The bucket has to be able to withstand a load of 80 pounds. The only way to do that is with a steel frame, and the frame has to be square. And not just any square, but one that’s exactly 1 inch on each side, because when it comes time to attach the tile or brick, you don’t want them to fit over the edges of the bucket. And that means you need a special kind of square: a LEGO box.

So I spent most of my evening cutting 1-inch blocks of steel out of steel sheets, so they’d be square enough to use as squares in the concrete mix. Then I spent most of another evening trying to find LEGOs large enough for a full bucket.

I didn’t find any, but I did get two buckets filled with concrete that looked like tile

One of the biggest complaints I hear from people who ask me to build them a staircase is, “Why do you have to make it look like wood? The wood looks nice. It’s got that character.”

The answer is that the wood is not actually wood. It’s something else.

I recently had a client request that a wooden staircase look like tile. The stairs were built with a special type of concrete our company makes (called ABS cement, as opposed to Portland Cement). The client was disappointed with the look and said he wanted the stairs to look like tile. So we changed the finish on the stairs, which came out very well. But at the same time, I realized that if we made this finish standard for all our staircases and petrified wood doors, we would find ways to make other products look wood-like too.

We could even make furniture and doors seem like they were made of wood by using this same technique. I’m not joking: this is something I am working on right now.
