What is Spray Foam Insulation?
Spray foam insulation is a combination of chemicals that are sprayed out of a special gun onto walls or other surfaces. The sprayed chemical will expand anywhere between 40 to 100 times the amount that was sprayed out and act as an insulator as well as blocking air infiltration. Currently there are two main types of spray foam insulation: open cell (less dense) and closed cell (more dense). Why Should I Use Spray Foam Insulation?
R-Value – The R value for open celled spray foam is around 3.5 per inch compared to the R-13 rating for fiberglass batting. Closed cell spray foam has an R value of 5 per inch. I am finally getting around to posting pictures of some work we did this past weekend. In case you haven’t heard already, Scott bought our first home! We closed on Friday and spent the weekend moving in and getting our first project done.
We are so excited to be homeowners again! We have been renting since we got married 9 years ago (wow!) and it is nice to know that all of the hard work we are putting into our home will pay off eventually. (Even though my husband says there is no way we are ever selling!)
Our first project was to add insulation to the attic space above our garage. The house was built in 1978 and has little to no insulation in any of the exterior walls or above the garage. That is why when I was cleaning out the garage last week it felt like I was outside instead of inside!
The previous owners had run a heater in the garage year round which kept it from freezing, but also meant they had a huge electric bill each month. Now that we own the house we want to do something about it before winter arrives next year
Now that the weather is starting to get warmer, we can start to get our homes ready for the summer. One way to do this is to insulate your home. And one of the best ways to do this is with spray foam insulation.

HardieBacker is a cement board that is used as a tile backerboard. It comes in 1/4, 1/2 and 1 inch thicknesses. It is made by James Hardie, who also makes the popular siding materials HardiePlank and HardiePanel.
HardieBacker can be used in wet areas such as bathrooms and kitchens and can be used under wood floors on the ground. It can be installed using screws or nails and can be cut to size using a utility knife or tile saw.
HardieBacker comes in three sizes, 3×5 feet, 4×8 feet, and 5×10 feet.
Hardibacker vs Durock
Hardibacker is similar to Durock, but unlike Durock, does not need to be sealed with a coat of paint before tiling. Hardibacker is made of cement and sand while Durock is made of Portland cement and silica sand. Both are water resistant and mold resistant.
