I’m going to show you how I built a small pool in my backyard. My family and I live in Southern California, so having a pool is really nice. We’ve been using it for 2 years now, and I’ve had no problems with it at all. If you’re thinking about building your own pool, then read on…
Before we get started, let me tell you what kind of pool I built. It’s not some fancy water-jet thing that costs a million dollars to install. Nope – this is just a plain old pool made out of concrete with rebar and PVC pipe for structure. It’s nothing fancy, but it works great!
I used the pvc cement and it worked out real well. I have no complaints about it. It’s a little more expensive than the liquid pool glue, but it’s a lot easier to use and dries faster. You don’t have to hold the joints together for very long before they set up. I would highly recommend using it if you are building your own pool.
I found this product working well on my own project. I bought a pool liner from an online shop and decided to install it myself with the help of my friends. I was able to dig and level the ground for the bottom of the pool in about two and a half days. The next step was to put down sand then vinyl liner. After laying sand, I started tackifying the floor of hole using PVC cement. It went well and I don’t have any wrinkles on my liner after filling the pool with water.
So you’ve decided to build your own pool. You’re looking at spending around $500 for a pvc cement, sand and rock pool that will last as long as you want it to. Don’t get me wrong this pool is strong but it won’t last forever. It will last as long as you want it to if you take care of it.
There are many ways to build a pool the right way but I’m going to show you the way I built mine. Yes I said I because my husband was in the military at the time and he was in Korea when I built the pool. This pool was built with just me and my two kids who were 8 and 12 at the time.
The first thing that you need to do is pick an area where you want your pool whether it be on grass, dirt or pavement. You need to make sure that your ground is level and fairly free of large rocks or tree roots.

The next step is to prime the pipe then cement it together. I have seen conflicting reports on whether you can get by with just using pvc cement or if you really need the primer and cement. I have stuck to the manufacturer’s recommendation of using both and had no problems with leaks. To prime the pipe, put a small amount of primer on each end of the pipe and spread it around with your finger. Next, apply a thin bead of cement to each end of the pipe and quickly push them together. It is important to do this quickly so that you don’t waste too much of the cement being applied. Wipe off any excess cement that oozed out when you pushed the pieces together and move on to the next section.
Now, you will have to use pvc cement (glue) to join all the pieces together. If you watch the video at the bottom of this post, you will notice that it is a slow process to do so. The glue hardens quickly, so you can only do one or two pieces at a time. This is necessary though because if you had to wait for all of the pieces to dry before putting them in the ground, it would be very difficult and require a lot of back breaking labor.
You could also choose to rent a pvc cement gun which will speed up the process but cost you a bit of money doing so.
I guess the most important thing is the glue you use. I am using PVC cement. It’s probably the strongest glue you can use. The only problem is that it’s toxic. So you should wear a mask when working with it.
