Surface Bonding Cement is a unique product with some unique properties. It is a masonry product that can be used to build walls, bond existing walls and create planters or even patios. The product forms a concrete surface when it sets up.

It is typically used for cement block walls but I have personally seen it applied on brick, painted block and stucco walls. It is not recommended for use on painted surfaces as the cement may etch into the paint causing the paint to peel off over time. The best surfaces to apply it to are unpainted masonry block and plain brick.

Surface bonding cement has a product life of about 20 years or longer if maintained well. This is about twice the life of a typical paint job and it also provides an additional layer of protection against water penetration.

Our Surface Bonding Cement is a fiber reinforced portland cement based coating for concrete block and masonry walls. It is applied in a single coat by trowel, and it has a fine aggregate texture that is similar to stucco.

The product is packaged in 80 lb. bags, and it comes in two standard colors – Gray and White. Custom colors are available with special orders.

The use of surface bonding cement is carried out by embedding the specimen in epoxy resin, applying the surface bonding cement on the surface and then cutting it into thin sections using glass knives. Surface bonding cement can be used for embedding plant stems, roots and leaves; animal tissues (muscle, liver etc), fibrin clots, blood films, some histological tissues and cytological preparations.

However, the use of surface bonding cement is limited to those tissues which can remain unmoved during the application of this cement on one side.

The method of embedding tissue in epoxy resin followed by applying a layer of surface bonding cement over it to achieve very thin sections was first proposed in 1958 by C.B. Gartner et al., (Gartner et al., 1958).

The authors claimed that this method provides excellent ultrathin sections with very little distortion and thus can be used for electron microscopy studies (Gartner et al., 1958).
