PVC cement is a chemical solvent. It literally fuses the pieces of pipe together. The solvent literally melts the outer layer of the pipe and the fitting and they bond together as they cool.
How to Use PVC Cement
You can use PVC cement on any piece of PVC that you have, but it is most often used on threaded pipe or fittings. When you are gluing threaded pipe, you will want to add a little bit of oil to the threads so that they do not get stuck. You will also want to make sure that the threads are in good condition, as this will allow for a better seal.
To glue threaded fittings, apply a thick layer of PVC cement all over both ends that join and then twist them together. The cement will dry very quickly, so make sure that you can get them together before you put too much on. If you are using two straight pipes or two straight fittings, apply the cement to all the surfaces that will be touching and then put them together at once. The joint should be firm within seconds, but wait at least an hour or two before applying pressure to ensure that it is secure.
PVC cement comes in a variety of sizes to accommodate different piping diameters. The basic rule is that the larger the diameter of the pipe, the larger the container of PVC cement required. Sizes range from small tubes that can be used for smaller PVC projects to gallon size containers that can be used for larger jobs.
There are many different brands on the market today and most are pretty good, but some are better than others. Many consumers prefer certain brands over other brands for personal reasons. The bottom line is that all of them will work very well if you use them correctly.
To properly use PVC cement, make sure you understand what type of job you’re doing, and use the right amount of cement. If you’re doing a large job with a lot of joints and couplings, it’s best to buy and use a large container so it’s convenient and available when you need it. For smaller jobs, smaller containers (such as 1/2 pint or 1 quart) will work fine.
When PVC cementing, the most important thing is the type of cement you are using. There are two different types of PVC cement and both work well for different applications.
PVC cement used for irrigation pipe is designed to be used on large diameter pipe, 4 inches or greater. This cement has a much longer working time than the type of cement used for pressure pipes like water and sewer. The long working time makes it perfect for large pieces of pipe that may take longer to fit together. Because larger diameter pipe takes longer to fit together, there is more chance for the joint to move around. This PVC cement has a longer working time that allows it to hold in place longer to create a successful joint.
PVC Cement with purple primer is designed for smaller diameter pipe that needs a faster setting glue to hold the joint in place quickly before too much movement can occur. This glue sets almost right away and has a very short working time
PVC cement is a great way to permanently seal up your PVC pipes and fittings. This will ensure that you do not have any leaks down the road. PVC cement is a chemical solvent which melts the plastic of the pipe and fitting and bonds them together. The bond created by PVC cement is so strong, that it cannot be taken apart. So make sure everything is in the right place before you apply the glue.
PVC cement comes in two different types of formulations: regular body and heavy body (also called thick or extra thick). This refers to the viscosity of the glue, in other words how thick it is. Regular body glue has a medium thickness while heavy body glue is thicker. You should use regular body on pipe sizes less than 2” diameter and heavy body on sizes larger than 2”.
To apply PVC cement, you squeeze out a big glob onto the end of your fitting (called “priming”). Then gently push your pipe into the fitting until it stops. Then twist it slightly while pulling back to spread out some of the excess cement inside. You don’t want to leave any big pockets of air if possible.
PVC cement sets very quickly, usually within 15-30 seconds, so work quickly!
PVC cement is very easy to use. The most difficult part is preparing the pipe and fittings, but once that’s done it only takes a few seconds to put them together. Here’s how:
1. Clean off any dirt or oil from the end of the pipe, using steel wool or PVC primer.
2. Apply PVC cement to both the pipe and fitting, going all the way around in a circle.
3. Push the pipe into the fitting until it stops. It will be hard enough to hold without any additional effort on your part.
4. Let it sit for at least 15 seconds before testing it with water pressure, or 24 hours before burying it underground .
PVC Cement is used to join two pieces of PVC pipe together. It is a chemical compound that melts the outer plastic layer of both pieces of pipe, fusing them into one solid piece. The end result is a pipe joint that is stronger than the individual pipes themselves. PVC Cement can be used on PVC pipes ranging in size from 1/2 inch to 4 inches.
If you want to use PVC cement, it will help to understand what it is. PVC cement is not the same thing as money. PVC cement is as old as human history. Far older, in fact; ants have PVC cement. Money is a comparatively recent invention.
PVC cement is the fundamental thing. PVC cement is stuff we want: food, clothes, houses, cars, gadgets, travel to interesting places, and so on. You can have PVC cement without having money. If you had a magic machine that could on command make you a car or cook you dinner or do your laundry, or do anything else you wanted, you wouldn’t need money. Whereas if you were in the middle of Antarctica, where there is nothing to buy, it wouldn’t matter how much money you had.
PVC cement is what you want, not money. But if PVC cement is the important thing, why does everyone talk about making money? It is a kind of shorthand: money is a way of moving wealth, and in practice they are usually interchangeable. But they are not the same thing, and unless you plan to get rich by counterfeiting, talking about making money can make it harder to understand how to make money.
Money is a side effect of specialization.
