If you have a concrete floor in your home, you may be wondering if there is any way that you can make it shine like a marble floor. The good news is that polishing your cement floor is possible. Here is how to do it.
Step 1 – Sweep the Floor
Before you polish your concrete floor you need to sweep it. You could use a broom to get the job done, but this will take quite a while. A better idea might be to use an electric broom with a hard bristle attachment. This will help loosen any dirt and debris. It will also help abrade the surface of the cement so that the polish has something it can stick to.
Step 2 – Clean the Floor
Once your concrete floor is swept, you need to clean it thoroughly with water and soap or another mild cleanser. If you are using soap, use warm water for rinsing it off because cold water can leave soap residue behind. If there are stains on your floor, you may want to consider using trisodium phosphate (TSP) mixed with water according to package directions or a commercial cleaner made for cement floors. After cleaning, let the floor dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Step 3 – Polish Your Cement Floor
Have you noticed that the concrete floor of your garage or basement has become dull over time? Maybe it is even cracked in some places. What can you do to make it look better? You may have been told that a cement floor cannot be polished.
Well, you can polish a concrete floor and give it a beautiful finish, but it is not truly polishing the concrete. Polishing is done on stone floors with fine grits of diamond impregnated pads that are specifically made for polishing natural stone. You will not find diamond pads designed to polish concrete.
When we talk about a cement floor that has been polished, we are actually talking about mechanically abrading the surface of the concrete and exposing aggregates (stones) in the mix. In other words, making the surface rougher and not smoother.
There are several steps involved in creating this textured surface:
-Diamond grinding the cement floor with progressively finer grit metal bonded diamond abrasives
-Polishing with a resin bonded abrasive loaded with finer and finer grits of abrasive
-Densifying the cement floor to harden and strengthen it
-Applying a stain or sealer for protection and decoration
Considering how long concrete has been around, since the ancient Romans discovered how to mix lime and volcanic ash, it is kind of surprising that it took until the 1830s for people to discover how to make it using Portland cement.
The Romans knew how to make concrete, but not Portland cement. They made a type of concrete using a mixture of lime and volcanic ash as the binder. Sometimes they added small amounts of pozzolans, natural materials that also react with water to bind sand and gravel together. The resulting concrete was strong enough to build structures like the Pantheon in Rome that are still standing today.
Concrete made from Portland cement was first used in 1845 by Joseph Aspdin in Leeds, England when he built his home out of “Portland Cement.” He called it this because it looked like a stone quarried on the Isle of Portland off the coast of England.
