Use your decor to make your home cozier
Of all the spaces in your house, the living room is where it’s most important to hit that warm and cozy mark. It’s the place your family comes together at the end of a long day, and where you host parties for friends and hang out on weekends. The good news is, you can make it feel warmer and cozier without spending any money by rearranging your decor. It’s one of my favorite home improvement ideas because it’s free to do, but really transforms the look and feel of a space.
Add some personal touches like family photos or mementos from trips you’ve taken. Layer soft throws over armchairs or sofas (here’s a tip for finding cheap blankets). And don’t forget about rugs — they’re great for making any kind of flooring more comfortable to walk on barefoot. Lastly, make sure all this stuff has personal meaning to you — whether it’s items that remind you of good times with friends or something else entirely, even just the act of looking at them should be enough to put a smile on your face.

Show off your books with some DIY shelving
If you have a long hallway or blank wall space, you can use this room to its full potential by creating your own personal library. If you’re lucky enough to have a fire escape outside your bedroom window, then you’re in luck. You can use the space under the stairs for extra shelving.
Or if you’ve got an old door laying around, consider hanging it on the wall horizontally and turning it into shelves. Another option is to lean an old ladder on the wall in your living room and start piling books onto it.
Use string lights and an old ladder to create a backyard hangout
- Find an old ladder that you don’t need. This may be a ladder with a missing rung, or a leaning ladder against a fence, shed, or wall.
- If the ladder is leaning against something and is stuck there, use WD-40 to loosen it up
- Use string lights that plug into an outlet (if you have one nearby) or solar powered string lights (if the area is in sun for part of the day).
- If you are using lights that plug in to an outlet, wait until after dark before you carefully climb the ladder and wrap your string lights around it. You should have someone holding the bottom of the ladder for safety reasons (you don’t want to fall off!).
- Once your string lights are wrapped around your old ladder securely and evenly, plug them in and enjoy!
Put empty wine bottles to use as candle holders
Looking for a clever way to upcycle those empty wine bottles? Use them as candle holders! Even if you don’t consider yourself a crafty person, this project is perfect for you: it’s simple and won’t cost a dime. The extra lighting will be an added touch for your next dinner party or romantic date night. Just remember: always use caution when working with glass and candles. Here are some safety tips:
- Always use a candle snuffer to put out the flame. This will help prevent wax from dripping onto tablecloths, walls or other furnishings.
- Don’t burn candles too close to anything flammable (such as curtains). Keep them at least 12 inches away from the nearest surface.
- Never leave candles unattended or burning in the presence of children or pets.
Turn vintage windows into a headboard
- Paint the glass. Using chalkboard paint is an excellent way to create a custom look. You can also use stencils and spray paint for more design options.
- Attach the windows with brackets, hinges or just glue them together using a strong adhesive and some wood clamps to hold it in place while it dries. Consider adding shelves between the window panes if more storage space is needed.
- Hang your new headboard on the wall behind your bed using sturdy brackets and screws that can penetrate at least 2 inches into studs for added security and stability for this heavy project.
Swap out your cabinet door handles for skeleton keys
A quick and easy way to add a bit of charm to any room is to swap out your cabinet door handles for skeleton keys. It’s not as difficult as it sounds!
To remove the old handles, unscrew them clockwise with a slotted screwdriver, using a rag or paper towel over the head of the screwdriver to protect the finish.
To find replacement keys, go to your local flea market or antique store. You’ll usually be able to find affordable options there.
To install the new keys, open each door and attach one key by sliding its shank through one side of the opening in each knob rosette (one per side), then fastening it with screws at either end (the rosettes are decorative coverings that fit around each end of the handle). Repeat for all doors and drawers.
Consider reusing your old handles on other furniture pieces like dressers or bookshelves.
Create a chalkboard that’s actually easy to clean
You can transform a small section of a wall into a chalkboard with some chalkboard paint and a paint roller. Simply paint over the small area with the paint and let it dry. You don’t have to worry about creating perfect borders, as any inconsistencies will look better once the whole thing is done. And when you need to clean it, erase it with a chalkboard eraser instead of using water – this will actually make the surface more difficult to write on in the future if you get it wet!
