Concrete is a mixture of paste and aggregates, or rocks. The paste, composed of portland cement and water, coats the surface of the fine (small) and coarse (larger) aggregates. This powder is then blended with other ingredients (such as iron ore), heated in a rotating kiln at about 2,700 degrees Fahrenheit until reacting with each other to form marble-sized clinker particles. These clinker particles are ground together with about 5% gypsum to control the setting time of the cement to form portland cement.
