betong is approximately 4 hours by road from Samarinda, East Kalimantan’s capital city. There are no regular flights to betong as it does not have an airport. However, you can catch a flight to Samarinda and then continue your journey by land to betong by bus or taxi which takes about 3 hours (if you take one of those “express” buses). Betong is the Gateway to the Kelabit Highlands, a mountainous region with tumbling waterfalls and friendly people. The Kelabitis are a small tribe of aborigines who live in longhouses along ridges of the highlands overlooking valleys of paddy fields and jungle.
Tourists can also visit a traditional Iban longhouse in Long San, about 100km from Betong. Long San is accessible by car from Betong or by boat from Tanjung Isuy (also known as Lawas).
The Mahakam River has become an important tourist attraction. It is home to the orangutans, proboscis monkeys and other wildlife. The first thing that strikes you about Betong is the unique architecture of the town which combines both Chinese and Dayak cultures. The second thing that strikes you is the genuine hospitality of its residents who still speak in their local dialect, Nge’e for those who are familiar with it.
Betong can be reached by road from Samarinda or Balikpapan and takes about 8 to 9 hours driving time from either city. Visitors are advised to plan their travel time carefully because there are long stretches of jungle roads where any sort of mechanical problems can only be solved at Tanjung Selor. There are no other towns that can provide help along these roads and this can create a lot of problems if you do not have any spare parts to repair your vehicle. It is also difficult to hitch-hike rides along this stretch because there are very few vehicles traveling on this road.

The town itself is nothing special, but there are some good hotels and restaurants and a few shops selling local handicrafts and souvenirs. But the real attractions of Betong are the surrounding countryside and villages.
The best way to visit is to hire a small speedboat called a “klotok” to take you upstream to Long Iram, which is located on one of the biggest oxbow lakes along the whole Mahakam River. The trip takes about 3 hours each way and costs around 350,000rp (Oct 2020). The boat can take up to 8 people, so you can split the cost between friends or other travellers. There is an additional charge for any fishing equipment used during the trip.
Long Iram itself is a very small settlement with only 20 or so families living there. Most make their living from fishing, hunting or running homestay accommodation for visitors. It’s not really possible to stay here unless you have your own tent and

It’s a quiet town with friendly people, good food and even better accommodation. But it’s main attraction is being located at the foot of Puncak Mandala, which is Indonesia’s second highest mountain. There are many hiking trails around Betong and it is also possible to organize treks to Puncak Mandala itself.
Betong is not yet well known among tourists but it will be one day soon!
The town has a population of about 12,000 people. The main language is Bahasa. However, you may find some people speaking Melayu or Iban.
betong is the starting point for boats to Muara Muntai and longkau. It is also a good place to start river trips up the Mahakam River.
Most tourists stay at betong for only one night on their way to longkau, as there are not many attractions in betong itself.
