You may notice that your face and head tend to get cold first. This is because they’re so exposed, and the blood flow in these areas is less than it is in other parts of the body. Make sure you protect your nose, mouth, and cheeks from the cold air by using ski goggles or a mask. Choose a hat that is comfortable, breathable, and keeps you warm without overheating you. These days, I work outside in very cold weather. I manage a ranch in rural Colorado. It’s not uncommon to experience temperatures as low as -15°F, and sometimes colder. One thing I have learned is that your head is critical to keeping warm in the winter if you are going to enjoy it!

I usually wear two hats; a beanie under my helmet keeps my head warm when we’re on horseback or snowmobiling through the mountains. If it’s colder than 20°F, then I add a balaclava for extra warmth (and I like having the extra layer to protect my face from frostbite). Depending on how far below zero it gets, you can even layer two balaclavas on top of each other (one wool and one synthetic) so your face stays dry while staying nice and warm!
