The challenge this year was to design and build a robotic arm that could safely and efficiently handle radioactive waste. This was a complex task, requiring a team to consider factors like radiation shielding, material selection, and control systems. The team, comprised of 12 students from Sellafield Ltd, 12 sixth formers from local schools, and 6 degree students from the University of Cumbria, worked together to overcome the challenge.

The team’s initial assessment revealed that the damage was extensive, affecting the entire pontoon structure. The team identified several key factors contributing to the damage:

* **Exposure to harsh weather conditions:** The pontoon had been exposed to strong winds, heavy rain, and salt spray for an extended period, leading to corrosion and deterioration. * **Lack of maintenance:** The pontoon had not been properly maintained, resulting in the accumulation of debris and the weakening of structural components. * **Improper installation:** The pontoon had been installed incorrectly, leading to uneven load distribution and potential stress points.

A young person, during their summer holiday, participated in a work experience program in Cumbria. They gained valuable insights into working life and the career opportunities available in the region. The experience provided them with a practical understanding of various job types, required skills, and qualifications. They also witnessed firsthand the significance of teamwork and communication in the work environment.

The team’s success is a testament to their dedication, hard work, and collaborative spirit. Their innovative approach to problem-solving, coupled with their ability to adapt and overcome challenges, has been instrumental in their success. This is a significant milestone for the company, demonstrating its commitment to innovation and its ability to nurture talent.
