Masonry cement is a fine, pre-blended mixture of sand and portland cement designed for use in masonry construction. It is manufactured under strict quality control procedures and meets the requirements of ASTM Specification C-91, Standard Specification for Masonry Cement. Masonry cements are specifically formulated to meet the needs of the mason contractor and are available in Types N, S, and M.

Type N masonry cement is specially formulated to produce reinforced masonry mortar for use in load-bearing walls, foundations, chimneys, arches and other masonry structures where high strength and good durability are required.

Type S masonry cement is specially formulated to produce reinforced masonry mortar with increased compressive strength and bonds that exceed the minimum requirements of ASTM Specification C-270, Standard Specification for Mortar for Unit Masonry.

Type M masonry cement is especially formulated to produce mortars with very high bond strengths. The use of Type M mortar results in higher compressive strengths than those specified for Type N or Type S mortars in ASTM Specification C-270.

Masonry cement is specially formulated to provide a workable consistency and superior bond without the use of lime. Masonry cements comply with ASTM C91 and Federal Specification SS-S-1401C. Masonry cement is used for construction and repair of brick, block, and stone for footings, walls, columns, chimneys, fireplaces, arches, and other masonry structures.

Masonry cement is available in three types: Type S (2500 psi), Type N (750 psi), and Type M (2000 psi). Type S masonry cement contains sulfate resisting properties for use where soil conditions are moderate to severe. Types N and M are used where soil conditions are moderate to low.

Types N and M contain air-entraining agents that produce small air pockets within the concrete that help resist damage during freeze/thaw cycles. Air entrainment also enhances workability of the mix during placement. Excessive handling time should be avoided to prevent loss of air content.

Masonry cement is specially formulated to provide the best performance in masonry applications. Masonry cement can be used to make mortar that is workable, durable and resistant to cracking.

This adhesive bond is necessary to obtain maximum strength, waterproofing and resistance against freezing and thawing.

When mixed with masonry sand, properly graded from coarse to fine, this uniformity of texture ensures complete hydration between water and cement so that no voids are present in the resulting mortar which would reduce bonding power or durability.
