The ratio of sand to cement is a very important factor in stucco mix design. The proportions of sand and cement will determine the strength, durability and workability of the stucco mix.

The calculation below is for a standard stucco mix. It has enough strength to hold the stucco on the wall and it is not so strong that it cracks easily.
To make this mix you need to use a 1:3 Portland cement and sand mix in addition to hydrated lime. This mixture is called a type S mortar. You can make this mixture by adding 5 parts portland cement, 3 parts sand and 2 parts hydrated lime.
To build this ratio into your stucco mix you will need to add 2 buckets of sand, 1 bucket of portland cement, and 2/3 bucket of hydrated lime.
